Obituary for Lawrence Ray Merritt

Lawrence Ray Merritt
Lawrence Merritt, age 75, passed away on Sunday, November 12th. He is survived by his seven children—Michael Merritt and wife Maneenate, Nok Pullum and husband Jeff, Shaun Merritt and wife Eliana, Sumitra Black and husband Brian, Janet Sabol and husband Tom, Kris Merritt and wife Erinn, and David Merritt and wife Beth—19 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He joined his wife, Kathryn Merritt, who recently preceded him in death.

Larry was a humble man of service and sacrifice. He honorably served in the Air Force for 20 years, proudly retiring as an E-7 First Sergeant. He gave his best when circumstances required his most, as testified by his numerous awards, military decorations, and even a key to the city of San Bernardino, CA. This commitment to service continued into his family life. Larry was the epitome of the hard-working father, setting an example that his children loyally followed, to their own benefit and their father’s loving approval.

Larry’s embrace of fatherhood was his crowning achievement. He loved his children in a way that only their true father can. For a man of calculated action and well-chosen words, there was no shortage of either for his children. His devotion was a choice, given freely, and it was borne from a heart of unconditional love, resolute impartiality, and an unwavering belief in the goodness of each of his children. Although Larry’s journey was not without heartache, he came to rely on the healing and life-giving powers of love to bridge the gap between human imperfection and the ideal.

Calling hours are Thursday, November 16th 5-7pm, and a service to honor Larry’s life will be held at 11am Friday, November 17th, both held at Warren-Glenn Funeral Home 62 S. Main Street, Union City, PA. The Friday service will be followed by a lunch at the American Legion in Union City. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 237, Union City, PA, in remembrance of Lawrence Merritt.
