Obituary for Garland Owen "Smokey" Deitman

Garland Owen Deitman "Smokey", 77, of Meadville went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2023.

Born in Punxsutawney, PA on June 10, 1945, he was the son of the late Otto Joseph and Eve Eleanor (Jones) Deitman.

He proudly served in the United States National Guard.

Smokey was very social and enjoyed chatting with anyone he could. People enjoyed seeing him and having conversations at Bi-Lo, Quality Markets, and LoBlaws, where he worked. He also enjoyed talking to people while on his walks. The CATA bus drivers will surely miss him and his conversations. In his younger years, Smokey was an avid hunter. His family was very important to him.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Melody Schoonover of Titusville, Joseph Deitman of Cambridge Springs, and Darren Deitman and his fiancee, Cayenne Eastlick, of Meadville; his grandchildren, Christine Deitman and her fiancé, Cassandra Dunstan, of Australia, Tressa Schoonover, who is carrying Smokey's first great-grandchild, and her fiancé, Josh Breccy, of Titusville, and Dylan Schoonover of Meadville. He is further survived by his siblings, Sonney Jr. Deitman, of Michigan, Glory Merritt of Wyoming, and Tina Greenawalt of Gettysburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the ladies who raised him, his grandmother, Christina Anderson and his adopted mother, Mary Deitman and his brothers, Earl and David Deitman.

A funeral service for Smokey will be held at the Ryan M. Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 544 Chestnut Street, Meadville, PA on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 4 pm with Pastor Cliff Forbes, pastor of the New Beginnings Church, officiating.

Smokey will be buried in Rose Lawn Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.
