Obituary for Newel David Hershelman

Newel David Hershelman, 82, of Saegertown, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023 at Crawford County Care Center with his family by his side. He was born on April 8, 1940 in Meadville, a son of D. Elmer Hershelman and Ruth Rickel Hershelman. He married Erva Hutchinson Nichol on April 10, 1982. She preceded him in death on October 11, 2016.

He attended Saegertown High School and was employed with Channelock and later with Greenleaf Corporation for 37 years until his retirement in 2002.

Newel served in the US Army from 1958-1961 and was of the Protestant faith.

He enjoyed farming, playing bingo, and going to the casino. He loved taking care of his property in Saegertown and had many compliments on it. He was very mechanically inclined and loved working on engines and machinery.

Newel is survived by his step-children, Jeffrey Nichol of Saegertown, Scott Nichol and his wife Stephanie of Export, Dyanne Kiter of Guys Mills, Susan Gionti and her husband Mike of Meadville, and Peggy Hasko and her husband Evan of Conneautville; his children, Cheryl Hiller, Jeffrey Hershelman, and Randall Hershelman; his grandchildren, Meagan Harper, Tyler and Reece Nichol, Melissa Urey, Olivia, Italia, and Anthony Gionti, Andrew and Elizabeth Hasko; his great grandchildren, Zander and Riley Harper, Ethan Nichol, and Cameron and Rider Urey; and his beloved dog, Penny.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erva; his brothers, Jim and Harold Hershelman; and a sister, Linda Repko.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Burial will take place in Rundell Cemetery, Rundelltown.
